Friends and Supporters of the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale,
As I start to write this it is the 4th week of September. The State Fair is over and we have completed our “driving responsibilities”. Just so everyone knows, volunteers from churches and communities drive the tractors pulling the shuttles, as a way of helping to pay for the rent on the Fairgrounds. Thanks to all of you who drove. It is an important way of working with the State Fair.
Our relationship with the fair administration and maintenance is good. It is important for us to continue to thank them and let them know we appreciate the continuing opportunity to use the Fairgrounds as our home for the April meeting of the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale.
Last year was a great success. We had great donations, great participation, and tremendous generosity. We were able to provide $700,000 for the work of the Mennonite Central Committee, with a good part of it going to help the situation in the Ukraine.
This year the world continues to have problems and difficulties. There are many refugees, much hunger, water shortages and many looking for a reason to hope. That is one of the great things that MCC does. With the help of donations of many kinds, the Relief Sales across the United States and Canada respond to the need for hunger and medical relief all around the globe. This gives us a reason to get together, to become community, serving one another, and working together to provide hope…along with food, clothes, medicine, and education…In the Name of Christ.
In November we will meet to kick off the planning for the 2023 Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale. Mark your calendars now. The Kick Off Meeting will be at the First Mennonite Church in Hutchinson. The date is November 10 and we will begin at 7 PM.
I know that many of you are already gearing up for the 2023 Sale. I hear people talking about making quilts, about planning some crafts and woodworking projects, and deciding what the sale will look like as we move away from the pandemic years and go forward, knowing that we will have some hurdles to overcome. But God is with us, and we will be able to come together…and again make a sizable donation to the Mennonite Central Committee.
You should know that the Board is working to improve our infrastructure, to make things more efficient, and to think about what we might be able to do this year to help make the world a better place.
As usual we will need a host of volunteers, we need to come up with a team to take over the verenike and sausage responsibilities in the Domestic Arts Building. And we know there will be some leadership transitions again this year.
Committees have been meeting and more will be meeting before the Nov. Kick Off. If you have some changes you would like to make or something new that you would like to sell, get some information together and we will work with you to produce some “hope” for the people that will be helped by MCC.
Blessings to all of you, thank you for your prayers, your donations, and your investment in the work of the Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale. My prayers are with you all.
Jim Robb, Chairman, Kansas Mennonite Relief Sale
